Three video marketing truths you need to hear
I wish I knew these when I started.
When I started making video content, I wasted hundreds of hours stressing over what videos to make, who I wanted to be, and trying to be perfect.
Learn from my misery. Save yourself hundreds of hours (and thousands of $$$) by accepting these three truths about working with video.
1: Your first videos will suck
You won’t be happy with the first videos you make. That’s normal. Making video content is a skill. If you stick with it, you will get better.
You just have to commit to it.
2: Fancy equipment doesn’t matter
You know that guy who gets a new hobby and immediately buys all the top-of-the-line gear he can find? It doesn’t make him a pro overnight.
It’s the same for video. An interesting, engaging video shot on a flip phone beats a boring one shot in 4k. Start with what you have before investing too heavily in your gear.
3: Listen to your audience
Ideas are one of the hardest parts of video creation. Unless, of course, you listen to your audience!!
Your audience is trying to tell you what they like, all you have to do is listen. What gets the most engagement? What do people say in your comments, on sales calls, or to customer support? Use that to guide you and you’ll never run out of ideas.
Here’s how you can get started tomorrow
Three simple steps:
Pull out your phone (back camera)
Answer a question you know your customers have
Cut out all the silences and add captions
Now show it to your team and see what they think.
I wish I had known this stuff when I started. Forget the time and money, it would’ve saved my sanity.
But until someone invents a time machine (why isn’t anyone working on this?), the best I can do is share what I’ve learned. I hope it saves you some sanity.
Have a great Wednesday!
